Disaster Site Assessment

Course Code:
DMR 330
Course Description:

When a disaster strikes, the goal of first responders is to reduce immediate risks to human health and the environment. State and federal agencies may have to work to contain damage to affected areas and minimize further damage. Involved parties may initiate a damage assessment. The responsible parties will identify both negative impacts to natural resources and lost uses resulting from the incident, and, with public input, determine best methods, amounts, and locations for restoration and recovery activities. This course provides information and resources that will enable students to plan an effective natural resource damage assessment program and conduct rapid and effective damage assessments in order to save lives, protect property and the environment, and begin the process of recovery and mitigation.  With the use of geospatial technology and physical site assessment tools, students will practice assessing, collecting, and reporting damages during and after any event that causes damage both the built and natural environment.
