Community-Engaged Learning at Middlesex College provides enriching opportunities to students via civic engagement opportunities tied directly back to students’ coursework. Community-Engaged Learning is an experiential teaching method used to links course content to real-life experiences that focused on a community need or social justice issue. Students taking community-engaged learning courses are required to complete a designated amount of volunteer service hours (typically 10-20 hours) per semester with a local, not-for-profit community partner, usually with the entire class. Students then integrate their experiences with their coursework through ongoing reflection and class assignments. Research shows that students who engaged in community-engaged learning have been shown to feel more connected to the college community, have a better understanding of the course content, and a deeper understanding of the social issues faced by the local community. Community-Engaged Leaning courses are currently available through most academic departments. To find a list of Community-Engaged Learning classes available each semester, go to Search For Class and click on Community Engaged Learning under “Course Type"
