Honor Societies

Middlesex has several honor societies for students who excel in the classroom.

Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society that recognizes the academic achievements of community college students, provides opportunities for leadership, fellowship, scholarship and the chance to be of service to fellow students and the MCC community.  Current MCC students will be invited to join if they earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA after completing a minimum of 12 credits in credit-bearing courses, have completed all required developmental coursework and have a declared major. Phi Theta Kappa students may be eligible to apply for over $37 million in scholarships reserved by four-year colleges nationwide. For more information, call 732.906.2595.

Alpha Mu Gamma, the national collegiate foreign language honor society, recognizes and encourages the study of cultures through foreign languages. In order to be a member, students have to have two classes of foreign language completed at the intermediate level or higher, with grades of A- or A and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

Psi Beta, the national psychology honor society for community colleges, recognizes and encourages scholarship and stimulates interest in psychology. Students are eligible for membership if they have completed at least one psychology course with a grade of “B” or better and have an overall GPA of at least 3.25.  For more information, call 732.906.2590.

Lambda Epsilon Chi is the honor society for the Paralegal program and recognizes excellence in that field.  To be offered admission into LEX, students are required to have completed at least 43 credits if they are pursuing the Associate in Applied Science Degree, and at least 21 credits if they are pursuing a Certificate.    They are also required to have completed 9 Legal Specialty courses if they are pursuing the Associate of Applied Science Degree program and at least 6 Legal Specialty courses if they are pursuing the Certificate Program.  All students are required to have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA and a 3.50 GPA in Legal Specialty courses.  For more information, please call 732.906.2594. 

Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education is a 100+ year old, prestigious honor society for education students and professional educators in the field.  The society is dedicated to promoting excellence in the teaching field through professional development and philanthropy.  Notable laureates include Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Jean Piaget.  Students are invited to participate in chapter activities if they have a 3.0+ GPA, have completed 18 college credits, and have completed or are taking 6 credits of education coursework.  Successful participation in chapter endeavors will lead to official initiation into the honor society. The Humanities Honor Society engages students in the art of understanding humans as beings who feel, think, imagine and create. As importantly, participants will learn about the beauty of teaching others.  Neither minimum GPA nor fee is required.

Requirements:

- Committment to complete an academic article and to tutor for at least 12 hours at the MCC Learning Center.

-  Interest in developing critical and creative thinking.

Benefits:

- Upon successful completion, members will have a publication and a tutoring certification.
