Course Description:

From Gladiator to Rome, the silver screen and television are awash with epic movies and TV series set in the ancient world. This course examines the reception and interpretation of the ancient world by the modern world, as seen through various media such as paintings, architecture, and film from the nineteenth century into our own time. We will focus on how the past has been and continues to be (re-)interpreted for the present political and social context.
