Course Description:

Catholicism & Social Justice is an overview of modern Catholic Social Teaching (CST), which locates this body of thought in Catholicism’s broader biblical, doctrinal, and ecclesial tradition. The course examines the documents and key themes of CST; considers the sources and methods that shape and guide Catholic perspectives on faith, ethics, and public life; studies the contributions of major figures such as Oscar Romero and Dorothy Day; and critically analyzes several facets of Catholicism’s distinctive approach to politics and economics while evaluating CST’s strengths and weaknesses with respect to a range of today’s pressing social justice questions.
