Course Description:

Expounding on both previous classical ballet and modern courses, this intermediate contemporary ballet technique elective will focus on three cornerstone contemporary choreographers: Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, and Crystal Pite. Students will focus on the choreographic characteristics of each choreographer and discuss the impact each has had on concert dance and the evolution of present-day ballet. Each choreographer's technique will be broken down and taught in class via contemporary barre, center work, and choreographic phrases. Technical focus will be on increased technical abilities including working off balance of the center line, articulation and undulation of the spine, the use of space and plié, deviation in musical phasing and tempo, and the body responding to music as a motif.
