Neuroscience

Program Codes: NEUR
Bachelor of Science

The BS in Neuroscience trains students to be scholars and productive citizens by combining experiential and traditional instruction in a caring community of engaged learners. Neuroscientists study the structure and function of the nervous system, including the brain. They explore the diverse mechanisms which explain why animals, including humans, behave as they do. Many graduates go into careers focused on scientific research, which may require graduate training. Others go onto careers in business, the health professions, or public service.

Program Outcomes:

Every graduate of the Paul Smith’s College Bachelor’s Program in Neuroscience will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental concepts of neuroscience, including: the scientific method; the function of the neuron; and the development, function and variety of various species’ nervous systems
  • Assess relevance of our understanding of neuroscience to related topics in biology and psychology, such as development, behavior, and learning
  • Weigh the ethical implications of studying brain and behavior, and how this study relates to social and environmental issues
