Associate in Science

This option is for those students who seek a concentration in the specific study of nutrition and its relationship to health and who plan to transfer to a four-year institution. The curriculum is designed to provide a solid academic foundation for students who plan attend a wide range of health career programs leading to employment in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, adult care facilities, schools, youth agencies, laboratories, and nutritional counseling practices.

Program Outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • Explain how food is digested, absorbed, and used for growth and energy.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between healthy eating habits and the prevention and treatment of diseases.
  • Explain why nutrient requirements change over the lifespan.
  • Design a healthy diet supporting the individualized needs based on ethical decision-making and sensitivity to unique cultural considerations.
  • Perform scientific investigations utilizing laboratory equipment and instruments in a safe and effective manner.
  • Write laboratory reports utilizing scientific terminology.

General Education:

In addition to the program-specific outcomes listed above, students completing the Associate degree programs are required to demonstrate proficiency in the General Education learning outcomes. Specific outcomes may vary by program; please refer to the program requirements below.

Program Requirements:

A. Depending upon a student's placement or for transfer purposes, this program may have pre-requisite(s). See a pathway coordinator or student development specialist for advisement.

B. MA 108 is a prerequisite for MA 109 or test placement.

C. A minimum grade of "C" is required in all Math & Science courses.

D. It is recommended that students enroll in their first WI course upon completion of EN 101.

E. Students may test out of MA 108 prior to taking MA 109. Successful completion of MA 025 or MA 025A MA 025B sequence is required for this Degree. It is recommended that students complete this requirement prior to taking college-level Math and Science courses for this program.

F. Students may test out of CIS 101 or CIS 107. If they are successful, they are required to take another 3 credits of General Education.
