Physical Science


Associate in Science

This option is for those students who seek a foundation in chemistry, physics and mathematics and who plan to transfer to a four-year institution. The curriculum is designed to provide a solid academic foundation for students who plan to attend a wide range of programs including chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, physics, astrophysics, meteorology, astronomy, and geology.

Program Outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic laws and theories of chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics.
  • Apply physical and chemical concepts to analyze and/or solve problems.
  • Apply appropriate basic concepts and formulas to perform basic calculations.
  • Perform scientific investigations utilizing laboratory equipment and instruments in a safe and effective manner.
  • Write laboratory reports utilizing scientific terminology.
  • Evaluate scientific research as ethical procedures and maintain data integrity.

General Education:

In addition to the program-specific outcomes listed above, students completing the Associate degree programs are required to demonstrate proficiency in the General Education learning outcomes. Specific outcomes may vary by program; please refer to the program requirements below.

Program Requirements:

A. Depending upon a student's placement or for transfer purposes, this program may have pre-requisite(s). See a pathway coordinator or student development specialist for advisement.

B. It is recommended that students enroll in their first WI course upon completion of EN 101.

C. Students have the option of testing out of MA 109 prior to taking MA 120.

D. Students may test out of CIS 101 or CIS 107. If they are successful, they are required to take another 3 credits General Education.

E. Students may take the Organic Chemistry Sequence to transfer to a B.S. program in Chemistry or the Math sequence to transfer to a B.S. program in Physics.

F. MA 108 is a prerequisite for MA 109 or test placement

G. A minimum grade of “C” is required in all Math & Science courses.
