At PCCC, when new credit courses are developed, consideration is given to the Academic Rigor, Assignment of Credit and the Student Out-of-class School/Work Expectation. New and/or revised courses are reviewed and approved by the academic department, PCCC Assessment Committee, the PCCC Curriculum Committee and the PCCC Academic Council to ensure the course complies with established guidelines. The college and university committees' review ensures that the course contains the appropriate content, rigor, student work, and assessments for the academic programs and course level. The committees make sure that the requirements are met and consistent with PCCC's expectations.Once approved, courses are submitted to the New Jersey Council of County College’s Course Review Committee for peer review. Existing courses are reviewed every 5 years by this committee.
Course Codes
Each course is assigned a two/three-letter subject code followed by a three digit course number. Courses are frequently referred to simply by the abbreviation and number, such as COL 103 (College Success). In a course description, the numbers in parentheses indicate the number of lecture, lab, studio, or fieldwork hours per week, assuming a typical 15-week semester, for example COL 103 (2:0:0) means 2 hours of lecture, 0 hours of laboratory/studio and 0 hours of fieldwork/clinical/internship.
Only courses numbered 100 or above are applicable towards a degree or certificate.
Students who experience academic problems in a course should consult first with the faculty member directly concerned. If the problem cannot be resolved, students should seek their department chairperson or visit the Center for Student Success.
