Corporate Social Responsibility

Course Code:
MGT 308
Course Group(s):
Degree Applicable, MGT Upper Division Elective
Course Description:

This online course is offered via Paul Smith's College's partnership with the LCMC, a national consortium of private colleges. The partnership allows students to earn PSC credit toward job-focused degree programs. Courses are designed by top academics, reviewed by industry leaders, and taught by qualified faculty from other colleges within the consortium.

This course examines the role of corporate responsibility as a strategy to improve and safeguard people, profits, and the planet. It is no longer acceptable to consider companies as simply wealth-generating organizations with no obligations to the environment or the communities in which they operate. Students will examine several corporate initiatives that attempt to address these challenges, along with how they are being assessed in the public eye. Increased transparency of corporate operations and globalization have revealed notable variations in how organizations are attempting to balance the pursuit of profits and corporate stewardship, while avoiding greenwashing or purpose-washing. Improved measurements of CO2 emissions, natural resources, pollution controls, monitoring ethical supply chains, and expanded training of employees are growing internationally and are yielding considerable results. Stakeholder expectations that focus on the triple bottom line have also increased, further expanding the opportunity for organizations to leverage corporate responsibility as a competitive advantage.
