Course Description:
This course describes the history, features and principles, and the organizational structure of the Incident Command System (ICS) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS), providing students with a basic understanding of NIMS concepts, principles, and components of a consistent nationwide template to guide all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. Importantly, the public information systems described in NIMS are designed to effectively manage the dissemination of public information at an incident. A brief overview of military resources in emergency management is also provided to consider U.S. military resources potentially available to assist civilian authorities in disaster response and recovery operations. The content areas of Incident Command Systems, National Incident Management Systems, Public Information Systems and Military Resources will be co-taught as on-line certification courses offered through the FEMA- Emergency Management Institute (EMI) and students will meet weekly for lecture.
