Course Description:
This course invites communication, science, and recreation students to explore and develop skills in the key themes and principles in the field of interpretation through engagement with interpretation literature, experiences at museums and science centers, and exposure to the Certified Interpretive Guide curriculum, a standard in the field of interpretation. Through field trips and discussion, students explore the social, cultural, and ethical impacts of interpretation in diverse content areas and the design and adaption of techniques based on audiences, cultures, and locations. Two weekend sessions include the National Association of Interpretation CIG course, after which successful students will receive their NAI Interpretive Guide certification. The CIG component combines both the theoretical foundations of the profession with practical skills in delivering quality interpretive programming to visitors. Note: Additional course fee is required to pay for NAI?s student-level certification fee and two all-day field trips. Prerequisites: REC 105 Recreation & Leisure in US or REC 133 Environmental Education or COM 102 Intro to Communication & Leadership or BIO 101 Biology I or FWS 101 Intro to Fish & Wildlife or FOR 110 Dendrology or HOS 101 Hotel Resort Tourism Orientation. Completes General Education Requirements: WC-I, RE-I, SC-I Course Dates September: Saturday 21 October: Saturday 5, Sunday 6; Saturday 12, Sunday 13 November: Saturday 9 Course Fees: Total $175.00 Breakdown of fees: $135 for CIG certification and course materials $40 for 2 all-day field trips to regional interpretive centers (sites TBD)
