Course Description:
This course is an introductory class in sea kayaking. Students will learn the skills needed to maneuver safely and comfortably on open water. Lecture topics include the history of sea kayaking, kayak and paddle designs, paddling techniques, water hazards, dressing to paddle safely, basic open water navigation, and simple rescues. Labs consist of various practice sessions and trips on local and regional waterways and lakes. These sessions and trips will provide students with opportunities to observe, discuss, and develop basic sea kayaking fundamentals while critically thinking about the challenges inherent in safely paddling and navigating a sea kayak on open water. These experiences will also provide students with opportunities to develop relevant decision-making skills and judgment as leaders-in-training. Students will additionally assist in the planning and execution of a weekend sea kayaking trip.(2 credit) Course fees $60. Prerequisite: REC 105 Recreation & Leisure in the US (or concurrently) and permission of instructor is required.
