Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to wilderness and wilderness designation and management in the United States, with a special emphasis on wilderness and wilderness management in the Adirondack State Park. Topics covered include the social construction of wilderness, the history of wilderness in America, contemporary wilderness philosophy, and the politics of wilderness. Students will explore how these dynamic phenomena influence wilderness-related policy-making at local, regional, and national levels. Case studies, field trips, weekend camping excursions, and interactions with local actors and stakeholders provide students with on-the-ground insights into wilderness policy-making and management. (2 hours lecture, 4 hours lab). Prerequisite: REC 105 Recreation and Leisure in the US Completes General Education Requirement:SC-I.
