Course Description:
The major topic of this course is biological diversity. Students will explore the various meanings of diversity, the role of diversity in natural systems and its importance in human welfare. Students will also study present and past biogeographic patterns, and factors affecting those patterns, with special emphasis on human impacts. Finally, students will focus on the methods used to ameliorate negative impacts on diversity within the framework of the social, economic, political and ecological problems involved in this endeavor. (3 hours lecture). Prerequisites: BIO 101 Biology I and BIO 102 Biology II and (BIO 210 General Ecology or FOR 310 Forest Ecology). Completes General Education Requirements: AR-I, SC-I, QP-I, RE-I, LAS.
