By grounding our study in the founding principles of the First Amendment, the course will facilitate analysis of the following questions: What is meant by the term mass communication? What influence does mass communication have on our public discourse and the way we function as a society? How is a message crafted to fit a specific media format or to reach a specific demographic? What kind of messages are truly for the masses and what messages are for defined groups and why? How do new media formats compare to historic methods and what are the implications of these new trends? Through this analysis, students should become critical consumers of communication messages.
