Course Description:
The course is designed to cover the wide range of topics concerning the chemistry of carbon. Students will study chemical bonding, nomenclature and reactivity of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, and alkyl halides, configuration of alkanes, and cycloalkanes, and stereochemistry. Additionally, students will learn various reactions mechanisms, with an emphasis on nucleophilic substitution reactions. The laboratory will focus on fundamental techniques in organic chemistry, e.g., distillation, purification, synthesis, chromatography and spectroscopy. (3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab). Prerequisites: CHM 141 Chemistry I and CHM 142 Chemisty II Completes General Education Requirements:AR-R LAS
