Military-Affiliated Applicants (Veterans, National Guard/Reserve, Active Duty or Military Dependents)

Military-Affiliated Applicants (Veterans, National Guard/Reserve, Active Duty or Military Dependents)

Middlesex County College is proud of its approximately 200 students who have served in the U.S military or are military dependents. To support these brave women and men during their transition to collegiate life the College has created a Veterans Services Center.  This Center has received national recognition for its excellence in providing service to our student veterans.  One of these awards is having been designated as one of the top fifteen community colleges in the nation by the Military Times Best for Vets program for the fourth straight year.

All veterans, service members, and dependents who are considering becoming a Middlesex County College student should contact the Veterans Services Center as early as possible in order to ensure that they will receive the benefits they have earned in a timely fashion.  MCC is proud to offer eligible Military Affiliated students the ability to take advantage of priority registration which affords them the opportunity to register one week earlier than new students.  Military-affiliated students also can take advantage of the Veterans Study Lounge to study, meet with fellow veteran students and spend time between classes.  The Veterans Study Lounge is located in College Center Room 104.

Veterans who have been honorably discharged, or current members of the National Guard or Reserves may have their application fees waived.  Please contact the Veterans Services Center prior to applying to the college for more information on this waiver.

The Veterans Services Center certifies the enrollment status of all students who apply for Department of Veterans Affairs and State-sponsored education entitlements at the College.

Veterans who are members of the Reserve Component or National Guard may be eligible for veterans’ entitlements under the Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606).  New Jersey National Guard members who are in good standing with their unit, and who have applied for federal financial aid, may be eligible to utilize NJDMAVA Form 621-2-R (Commander’s Certificate) to waive their tuition cost for up to 15 credits each semester.

Dependents of certain veterans are eligible for entitlements under multiple Department of Veterans Affairs educational chapters, including the Dependents Education Assistance Program (Chapter 35) and the Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33). Dependents who believe they are eligible for entitlements should contact the Veterans Services Center for more information about these programs.

Veterans who have been determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs to have a service-connected disability may be eligible for education and other entitlements through the Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services (Chapter 31) division. Middlesex County College is the only community college in New Jersey that has a VA VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC) counselor on campus.  Veterans who believe they are eligible should contact the Veterans Services Center for more information.

To maintain receipt of entitlements at the College, military-affiliated students must comply with the Standards of Progress established by the College. These Standards include degree requirements, standards and regulations, and compliance with the College’s Code of Student Conduct. Failure to observe these regulations may jeopardize the receipt of entitlements.

Furthermore, Middlesex County College agrees to follow the guidelines set forth by the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018 (Public Law 115-407).  As stated in the Public Law, “educational institutions must allow GI Bill and VR&E beneficiaries (Chapter 31 and Chapter 33 beneficiaries) to attend a course of education or training for up to 90 days from the date the beneficiary provides a certificate of eligibility/Valid VAF 28-1905 and not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution due to the delayed disbursement of a payment to be provided by the Secretary under Chapter 31 or 33 of this title due to late payments from VA”.

To find out more about your entitlements or to get answers to your questions please contact the Veterans Services Center.
