Guided by the motto “Educate to Elevate,” the New Brunswick Center opened in April of 1980 and provides educational opportunities to meet the needs of the community. The Center was established through the efforts of New Brunswick Tomorrow, the city’s redevelopment organization, aided by an advisory committee comprising of representatives of government, business, industry and community groups. Most staff members at the New Brunswick Center are bilingual in English/ Spanish. The New Brunswick Center is located at 140 New Street, corner of New Street and Joyce Kilmer Avenue and within walking distance of the New Brunswick train station, bus stop and a bustling downtown art/cultural center. Registered students with a car are encouraged to purchase the reduced student parking card which gives them access to the New Street parking deck seven days a week for the entire semester
This modern location offers many general education electives such as English Composition, Spanish, public speaking, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, art, mathematics, computer science, history and biology. Courses are scheduled throughout the day, evenings and Saturdays. The MCC New Brunswick Center staff is trained to support all phases of the enrollment process including admissions, registration, college placement testing, financial aid filing (FAFSA), academic advisement and student photo ID processing. College students can access academic tutors, library support and the open computer lab during hours of operation.
The New Brunswick Center also offers a number of classes for adults looking to improve their English language or computer literacy skills. These students can test and register on site for courses such as English as Second Language, American English Pronunciation, Conversational English, Word Building and Computer Confidence.
Since 2005 and in support of the local community, this location became certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as an official VITA site and with support from VITA certified volunteers, has been offering low income residents the opportunity to file their income taxes, FREE of charge, during the tax season. Finally, in 2009 the New Brunswick Center created the E.M.P.O.W.E.R. Program, a college preparation program aimed at first generation college students. The Center continues to partners with Rutgers, the Collaborative for Community Based Research and Service and the Middlesex County College Bonner Program to support high school students as they successfully transition to college.
