Project SPAN (A Mentoring Program Bridging the Gap Between Families and Community)

Project SPAN (A Mentoring Program Bridging the Gap Between Families and Community)

Project SPAN is a unique community mentoring program that provides a wide range of supportive services to families where there are varying degrees of existing or potential cases of child abuse and/or neglect.

By placing trained volunteers (18 years and older) in contact with these families 4-6 hrs per week, SPAN offers on a one-to-one basis, information, encouragement and guidance to either a child or parent in need of support.

SPAN volunteers are first carefully trained in the policy and procedures regarding reporting child abuse and neglect in the State of New Jersey, what is child abuse and neglect, the role of the mentor in helping families in crisis, multicultural sensitivity, crisis intervention, and community resources. Great care is taken to match the right volunteer with the right child or parent(s). Under the professional supervision of Claudia Yurecko, MA, SPAN Coordinator and Certified Field Instructor, the SPAN volunteer becomes an integral part of the community effort to reduce further incidences of abuse and/or neglect.
