Elements of Dance

Course Code: DAN-131

Course Description : Provides fundamental movement skills and body awareness in modern dance, basic training at the elementary level of ballet technique, introduction to a cross section of jazz technique, movement styles and rhythms, theory and practical application in the principles of dance forms. Additional focus will be on the ethnicity (African roots) in jazz, modern dance as the American dance form and ballet based on European (French, Russian, Italian) techniques. Emphasizes placement, strength, flexibility, coordination, musicality within the different dance idioms; the exploration of space, time and energy as the raw materials in dance; the specific vocabulary relating to the different dance techniques and the creative experience of short movement patterns.
